The Editors of the Salem Press, Recommended Reading: 600 Classics Reviewed [2015]

637 entries: 569 monographical, 68 otherwise

Unranked—arranged alphabetically by work

This book, like Masterpieces of World Literature, is a product of Frank Magill's publishing house, Salem Press. Comparing the two lists, one immediately sees many of the same works in both. But the two books are sufficiently distinct to warrant the inclusion of two lists instead of a combination. Initially at Greater Books we included the previous edition of this work, Recommended Reading: 500 Classics Reviewed [1995], because the current edition was published after much of the initial work on this site was completed. As the titles indicate, the newer work is an expansion of the earlier; all of the "500 classics" listed in 1995 are included in the latter volume with the exception of Toni Morrison's Beloved, certainly a noteworthy exclusion, but one which I cannot but guess is a mistake, as this volume is marked by several peculiarities suggesting the lack of proofreading. For example, the number of entries in the book itself is not 600, but 605. The final tally here (637) is due to several of the 605 entries actually listing multiple works, most notably "The Complete Stories of Sherlock Holmes," which results in nine monographical works, the four novels and the five story collections that comprise the canonical Holmes.
